Who's protecting DSHEA?
New HHS Secretary Says He’ll Work with DSHEA...During the confirmation hearing earlier this month of incoming Health and Human Services secretary, Mike Leavitt, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) questioned Leavitt about his plan for working with industry. Hatch specifically asked for comment regarding the misconception that supplements are unregulated, pointing out that the Dietary Supplement Heath and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) actually increased FDA’s authority over industry. Hatch also urged Leavitt to expedite the publication of final good manufacturing practices. Leavitt replied briefly to Hatch’s suggestions that he felt the senator’s statements approximated his own views. “It's clear to me that we have an obligation to assure safety but at the same time to provide innovation and choice,” said Leavitt, indicating that he would be willing to work within the framework of DSHEA.
